Yerachmiel Shapiro was raised in Northbrook, IL where he starred on the Glenbrook North football team until he decided to embrace a life of Torah. Finishing his high school studies at Skokie Yeshiva, he embarked on a religious journey that would change his life.
Yerachmiel spent two years of Torah learning and spiritual growth at Yeshivat Hakotel in the Old City of Jerusalem. He was inspired by two summers of learning with Rabbi David Aaron at Isralight Institute overlooking the Kotel. Returning stateside, he excelled as a Dean's List student at Brandeis University, where he majored in Psychology and Near Eastern Judaic Studies.
Seeking to continue his Jewish learning in a rabbinical school, Yerachmiel was inspired by the warm atmosphere and spiritual leadership of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah and Rabbi Avi Weiss. During his years at Chovevei, he led multiple weekly Talmud learning groups, delivered food packages for Kosher Meals on Wheels, and was a junior rabbi under the instruction of Rabbi Asher Lopatin and Rabbi Shmuel Hertzfeld. He also completed courses in chaplaincy at St. Lukes hospital and Riker's Island prison.
Recently, Yerachmiel was appointed to be the rabbi at Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah Congregation in Baltimore, MD.
Rabbi Shapiro lives in Pikesville, MD with his wife Helene, daughter Lila, and son Avraham Ben-Tzion.
